The thing that kills me the most about black men like ASAP who say dumb stuff about dark skinned girls not being able to do/pull of certain things is that I know how that effects dark skinned girls.

My (dark skinned) cousin has men in her life who constantly tell her how unattractive dark skinned women are. She’s told me all these things her brother (who she looks up to so very much) has told her about dark skinned girls. Including that he be with his girlfriend (a light skinned girl) if she was dark skinned, his child doesn’t like dark skinned people (after his newborn baby cried while my cousin held him), he’s outright told her that light skinned girls are attractive and dark skinned girls aren’t as if it were a fact. 

This girl has taken all these things her brother has said to heart and she’s internalized it so much. It’s fucked up for real. 

I don’t take lightly when black men say fucked up colorist stuff like this, because it DOES effect dark skinned girls who don’t have the privileged of being informed that guys who claim that dark skinned girls are beneath light skinned girls (and all other women) are speaking from their internalized white supremacy. 

Even when I tried to explain to her that it’s bullshit to say that dark skin makes someone unattractive she turned it around to say “it’s a privilege to be dark skinned and pretty because more dark skinned girls aren’t pretty”

this is how i feel every time i see beautiful Reginae Carter and i think about how her father is the most notorious rapper when it comes to colorism and dissing dark skinned women. 

what sort of message is that? he claims that he loves her more than life itself and at the same time *every* song is red bone this and red bone that. i don’t know how she could *not* grow up with a complex because of that.

lil wayne’s music is doubtlessly making lil dark skinned girls he doesn’t even know have a complex never mind his own daughter.

colorism will mess you up if you don’t understand where it comes from and that it actually makes these men lower than dirt who perpetuate it. but if you don’t even know what colorism MEANS or where it comes from then that will mess you up and it’s hard to get over that. even if later in life you start reading black feminist theory or whatever it may be that explains this stuff 

which is why i have no love for colorist black men.
